DE Design & Simulation Summit Returns in October

Digital Engineering magazine will present its second online DE24/7 Design & Simulation Summit on Oct. 6. The half-day virtual event will feature five presentations led by industry experts in simulation technology, generative design, additive manufacturing, and engineering workstations, led off by a keynote session on digital twins and the metaverse.

The event will kick off with a live keynote session covering the intersection of digital twins and the metaverse, led by DE Senior Editor Kenneth Wong and Daniel R. Isaacs, CTO of the Digital Twin Consortium, an industry organization focused on accelerating the growth and adoption of digital twins. 

Ryan McClelland, Research Engineer at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, will lead a session on the use of generative design technology, CNC and additive manufacturing or creating complex and lightweight designs. McClelland will discuss NASA Goddard’s Evolved Structures process, where applying these technologies to spaceflight structures resulted in 2x-4x improvements in stiffness/mass and a 5x-10x reduction in development time/cost.

Hardware Recommendations for CAD and Engineering Simulation: Long-time CAD and simulation user Ryan Navarro of Hawk Ridge Systems shares performance-optimizing configurations for typical CAD usage, and tips for pushing the limits of FEA & CFD. He discusses how to choose pre-built systems and specify relevant components for custom-built machines dedicated to simulation or rendering. He also identifies areas of diminishing returns to avoid overspending on hardware; and discusses the emerging alternative—cloud CAD and solvers. 

Sustainability in Design: Many manufacturers have launched sustainability initiatives in an effort to create more environmentally friendly product designs and to reduce the carbon footprint of their own manufacturing operations. CAD and simulation tools are emerging that can potentially help engineers better gauge the environmental impact of their design choices. In this session, presented by Israr Kabir, Senior Manager, Emerging Technologies at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, learn about new tools and best practices that can help designers measure sustainability and have a concrete global impact.  

Systems Level Modeling & Simulation Challenges: As designs become more complex and demand for a more holistic view of system performance increases, many organizations have turned to systems-level simulation and modeling to analyze and optimize designs. In this panel discussion, simulation and modeling experts will discuss what is driving interest in this approach; the challenges of leveraging systems-level techniques; the role of multiphysics tools; the need for greater software interoperability; and future trends in systems-level simulation.
